Biography

Dr Kavitha Chalakkal is currently an Assistant Director (Research) and Assistant Professor (Senior Grade) in Lloyd Law College. She has an experience of more than 8 years in academics and in national and international non-governmental sector. Dr Chalakkal received her PhD (2014) in International Environmental Law from the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, after completing her L.L.M. in Intellectual Property and Environmental Law (2006; Cochin Universtiy of Science and Technology, Kerala) and M.Phil. in Public International Law (2008; Jawaharlal Nehru University). She received her bachelor's degree (L.L.B.) from Kerala University in 2003. Before starting her career in academics, Dr Chalakkal worked with various non-government organizations. Dr. Chalakkal has many publications and presented papers in various international and national conferences. She has also won best paper and presenter awards in two international conferences. A member of the World Commission on Protected Areas and World Commission on Environmental Law, International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), she has also been a Fox Foundation Research Fellow to the Yale University, USA, during 2009-10. Dr Chalakkal has also developed study modules (2016) for Post-Graduate Courses for the e-Pathshala project of the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India.

Vision

Dr. Chalakkal's vision is to actively engage and support the students in achieving excellence and ensuring success to our students by building their leadership quality, innovative and critical thinking skills required in the current globalized, multicultural environments. As a teacher of law, I aim to make students understand the conceptual evolution and modern manifestation of the laws; b) to foster in them analytical and critical interpretation and thinking skills and to inspire them to be better human beings, global citizens, and leaders, who understand, implement, and propagate the values needed for the betterment of humankind.

Experience

Before starting her career in academics, Dr Chalakkal worked with various non-government organizations, including Common Cause India, Centre for Policy Research, New Delhi and Wildlife Trust of India, a leading Indian wildlife conservation organization, as the Assistant Manager and Officer in Charge (2013-14) of its Enforcement and Law Division. Dr. Chalakkal began her academic career in 2010 in Department of Law and Legal Jurisprudence, Central University, Sikkim. After the PHD Award, Dr Chalakkal joined Amity Law School Delhi, (Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Delhi) in 2014 and carried out responsibilities including: Teaching BA.LLB Students; subjects: International Trade Law, Public International Law, Intellectual Property law, Corporate Law and Environmental Law; Faculty in-charge of Dissertation and Viva; Faculty in charge Eco-Club; Member of (i) Publications Committee; (ii) Legal Aid Committee); and (iii) Student Internship Committee Dr. Chalakkal joined Lloyd Law College in July 2017 as the Assistant Director (Research) and Assistant Professor (Senior Grade) and has been carrying out duties relating to teaching under graduate law students in BALLB and LLM Program. Dr. Chalakkal is also a Visiting Faculty, Indian Society of International Law, New Delhi; November 2017 to present.

Roles & Responsibilities

Dr. Chalakkal performs both teaching and administrative duties at Lloyd Law College.

  • Teaching: BALLB and LLM Programs. Subjects include BALLB: Intellectual Property Law, Jurisprudence, Interpretation of Statutes, and Competition Law; Research Methodology for the LLM Program;
  • Dissertation supervision for the LLM in International Commercial Law;
  • Assistant Director (Research) To assist and support the students and faculty in publications (books, edited volumes and monographs); conducting research methodology workshops for the students.
  • Associate Editor: Lexigentia (an international, bi-annual, peer-reviewed journal of the Lloyd Law College)
  • Administrative Duties: Coordination of the LLM program; Faculty Coordinator- Prof. N.R. Madhava Menon South Asian Moot Court Competition, Students Conference and Colloquium.

Curriculum Development

  • Developed four MOOC e-Content (study modules, 2016) for Post-Graduate Courses for the e-Pathshalaproject, Ministryof Human Resources Development, Government of India: (1) Environmental Crimes; (2) International law and the Protection of the Antarctica and the Arctic; (3) Protection of Global Commons: High Seas and the Outer Space; and (4) Coastal Regulation Laws in India.
