Dr Covarrubia is a Senior Lecturer in Law at the University of Buckingham and an IP consultant at the Latin America IPR SME Helpdesk, co-funded by the EU Commission. She holds an LLM in European Law and PhD in Intellectual Property. Previously, she worked at the University of Brunel teaching IP Law and European Law. She has worked at BPP, School of Law, London where she was EU leader tutor for the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL). She taught in Bucks New University and in Holborn College, North Greenwich where she ran Liverpool John Moores, Wales University and London University programmes.
Dr Covarrubia is manager/blogger in IPTango (Intellectual Property weblog – Latin America) listed as one of the "World's Best IP Blogs" [BananaIP.com]. and one of the "Top 15 Blogs for an Intellectual Property (IP) Enthusiasts" [Buzzfeed]. Her research interests include geographical indications and indications of origin, compulsory licences in the pharmaceutical industry, and the protection of traditional knowledge. She is the author of Chemical Sense Marks: Frequent concerns when applying for trade mark registration at the OHIM (Saarbrücken: VDM Publishing, 2011).
In 2018, Dr Covarrubia chaired the session ‘Tangible and Intangible’ at the Association of Critical Heritage Studies conference, in Hangzhou, China. In the same year she was granted a scholarship by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) to receive IP training on IP asset management for business success at the Korean Institute of Intellectual Property (KIPO), Seoul. More recently, she obtained a research grant for the forthcoming book Transboundary Heritage and Intellectual Property Law: Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage (Routledge, 2021). She has published over 500 post in the IPTango blog, over a dozen of electronic material hosted by the EU at the Latin America IPR SME Helpdesk as well as hardcopy publications in top UK journals. She has been invited to participate in several Trade & Investment Roadshow and Expos, and interviewed (available on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I1icu7zZ6sg). She continues providing guidance and advice as an Intellectual Property expert via Webinars.
