Lloyd Legal Aid Centre ensures that the justice is made available in instances poor public defense and under-utilization of non-custodial measures to prevent unnecessary or prolonged detention of socially and economically vulnerable individuals in prisons. We undertake positive measures to assist in the release of prisoners who are in continued imprisonment due to factors like shortage of complying with the procedural requirements regarding documentation and inability to pay the fine imposed. We ensure legal awareness classes, legal assistance and rehabilitation support to the inmates and the released individuals.
Article 39A of the Constitution of India, provides for equal justice and free legal aid and states that the State shall secure that the operation of the legal system promotes justice, on a basis of equal opportunity, and shall, in particular, provide free legal aid, by suitable legislation or schemes or in any other way, to ensure that opportunities for securing justice are not denied to any citizen by reason of economic or other disabilities
Working towards this constitutional mandate, LASEC bases its premise on the fact that all citizens should have equal access to means of legal redress- access to inexpensive and expeditious justice- which is a basic human right and prevent the threat of exclusion from the rights guaranteed by law and the Constitution of India. LASEC carries out regular legal awareness workshops and under takes free legal aid activities.
