The States and Union Territories report states that a total of 4,61,312 road accidents recorded in the 2022, resulting in 1,68,491 fatalities and 4,43,366 injuries which states an increase of 11.9% in accidents, 9.4% in deaths, and 15.3% in injuries as compared to the previous year.

Road safety has always been a great concern in India and records upsurge in road accidents injuries and fatalities due to increase of vehicles, average speeds, and swift development of the road network.  So, now the important question is how to maintain road safety or how to keep children’s safe on two wheelers. Helmets help to protect riders from injury and death. Helmets shield their head from getting hit by rocks and other objects in the case of a fall. Hence, it is essential to always wear your helmet while riding a bike.

Helmets acts as a tool or gadgets in preventing riders and pillions from becoming hurt or death. When someone falls, helmets protect their head from being struck by rocks or other solid things. Therefore, it is essentially recommended that you wear a helmet whenever you ride a bike. Bike helmets are designed and made in such a way that it is helpful in reducing the impact force and absorb energy.

How to Fit Your Child for a Helmet ?

Whenever you plan to buy a helmet for your child then you must ensure that it meets the safety standards. For example, the U.S. government has established a safety standard for helmets for its country. Now, the question is how to fit a helmet for your child. So, take the below points into account while buying a helmet for your child.

  • Child’s helmet should have an ISI mark ensuing necessary standards and safety measures.
  • Take care of your child’s helmet size. It should be fitted comfortably.
  • Pay attention to helmet position. Always buy helmet that easily cover the child’s forehead and should rest two finger widths above your child’s eyebrows.
  • The right and left-side straps should be in a form “Y” as such straps are easier to adjust.
  • The chin strap or buckle of the child’s helmet should fit easily. You must remember that not more than one finger should fit under the strap.

Before sending your child on a bike ride, ensure the following.

  • Is the helmet properly fitted?
  • Is the helmet positioned correctly?
  • Is the helmet tilted forward too much?
  • When you shake your head, does the helmet move?

It's also critical to know when to get your child's helmet replaced. Your child may need a new helmet if:

  • Your child crashed while wearing the helmet;
  • Your child has outgrown the size of the helmet
  • The helmet hit a hard surface, like concrete, etc.

However, no helmet offers 100% assurance of reducing the risk of injuries but wearing an authentic and well-maintained helmet can save your child’s life. So, pay attention to the above details while buying a child’s helmet.
