Introduction to STAR Method

The STAR method is an interview technique which provides a straightforward format that helps in storytelling by laying out the Situation, Task, Action, and Result.

Situation: Think of the scene and provide necessary details

Task: Highlight the task and illustrate the responsibilities you handled during that situation

Action: Define the steps taken to address it

Result: Share outcomes received from your action

Where to apply STAR Technique?

The STAR interview technique is used to answer behavioral interview questions or any other sort of story where you are required to tell a story of a situation happened in the past. Now, the question is “How to recognize such questions?” No worries, such questions are quite easy to identify. They may often in the form of the following:

  • Illustrate a situation when…
  • Discuss an example of…
  • What action you performed when…
  • Define a situation…

When it comes to answering these sorts of questions, think of an example for your response is the first step. After this, you are required to provide necessary information in a compelling and easy way. This is what the STAR interview method offers you to do.

Creating an example to answer the above mentioned questions is the first step. Then, you must provide the details in a clear and captivating manner. This is what STAR technique enables you to do.

STAR Technique Example

If the interviewer says: “Tell me about a problem you have faced being a Content Writer”

We generally answer the question in a relevant manner rather focusing on Situation, Task, Action, and Result.

Situation: “At my previous organization, I was working as a content writer where I was liable to deliver a unique and well-designed content to different clients” 

Task: “The task was to deliver a plagiarism-free article to a client on a technical topic”

Action: “In order to complete the task, I had to be very careful about managing time, research and using tools. Thus, in order to meet the requirements of the client, I utilized different sources for collecting information, distributed the task and created a calendar, and used different plagiarism detection tools to ensure that the content is plagiarism-free.

Result: “As a result, the task was completed within the timeframe and also the content was unique and well-researched that the client finds well.
