The #MeToo movement in India is a manifestation of the international #Metoo movement that took the world by storm. In India it can said to be movement trying to free women from social fears which is influenced by the #MeToo movement of America. In October 2018 when Tanushree Dutta accused Nana Patekar of sexual harassment it raised the first flags for freeing the women from the male dominated discourse. Many women from different walks of life and different parts of India and society including news media, film industry, and even the government spoke out about culture of boys club and the sexual harassment it perpetuates.
The accounts emerging are unpleasant because women have felt their ability to do their job was severely compromised. The debate has arisen on the possible remedies including legal action. The deficiencies in the current administrative and legal approach to workplace Sexual harassment and dealing with anonymous allegations as well as how the movement can become more inclusive have also been focused upon.
Survivors are now seeing a change in the way theperception of others and are more willing to open up about sexual harassment and assault.
However there is a flipside to this as a recent news headline came as no surprise:
“Rule for the #MeToo era : avoid women at all cost.”
In a word it was inevitable. Senior executives of companies hiring a women has become “an unknown risk”.
